Social Media

Social media platforms like Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and LinkedIn are often used by University communications and marketing staff to provide information, engage with our community and promote campus events. The following tips will help ensure that our social media communications are as accessible as possible to people with disabilities.

  1. Use plain, understandable language and avoid overuse of acronyms that may be unfamiliar to external audiences.
  2. Use inclusive language. Consult the ADA Guidelines for Writing About People with Disabilities to learn more.
  3. Avoid use of emojis and emoticons to replace text.
  4. Include emojis and emoticons at the end of your text, never between words as this can interfere with readability.
  5. Add alternative text to images and gifs where supported.
  6. Provide captions for video content where supported.
  7. Use good color contrast on images, especially images containing text.
  8. Avoid overuse of hashtags, and be sure to use camelcase (#JumboPride not #jumbopride) to ensure readability.

Social media platforms vary in their support for alternative text and captions. Consult the documentation for your platform to learn about the accessibility features and known limitations.
