Telephone using Jabber on a PC

Overview

There are slight differences between the call interfaces on Jabber for a PC and Jabber for a Mac. The links below contain documentation that overview the call interface on Jabber for the PC.

Call menu on Jabber for PC

Once you select the green Handset button to begin your call, a call window appears.  The buttons at the bottom of the window provide additional features during the call. 

  • Full screen: Adjust your window to fit the full screen. 

  • Self-View: Turn on/off self video camera (If your computer has a video camera installed in or attached to the monitor) 

  • Keypad:  Enter PIN numbers or other numeric information while on a call 

  • Mute:  Mute/unmute your calls 

  • Volume: Turn volume up or down 

  • More: Access Transfer, Hold, and Merge call features 

  • Red handset: End a call 

Additional options at the top of the window 

  • Click the ellipsis (...) to access the ability to Share Screen or launch an Instant WebEx.   Note: Share Screen only works when the person on the other end of the call is also using Jabber. 

  • The speaker icon next to the ellipsis launches the audio Options window, if you need to select a new speaker or microphone during the call. 

Initiate a call on Jabber for PC

  1. In the "Search or call" Field type the name of the person or the 10-digit telephone number of the person you wish to call.    Note:  As you enter the name of a contact, if they are located in the Tufts Directory or stored in your Outlook Address Book they will appear in the Search window.  When the contact appears, you may see an email as well as a phone number, always select the phone number when using Jabber. 

  1. If you entered a contact name, select the person you wish to call. 

  1. Select the green Handset button

Incoming Call on Jabber for PC

When someone calls you, popup window indicating the incoming call will appear in the lower right corner of your screen. 

To accept a call: Click the green Answer button. 

To decline a call: Click the red Decline button. 

To chat reply: Click Chat reply and your caller will receive a chat message from you.

Transfer a call on Jabber for PC

While on a call, you can transfer to another person. 

  1. Click the More button on the Call Menu. 

  1. Select Transfer

  1. Enter the contact name or 10-digit number of the person you wish to transfer the call to. 

  1. Click the green handset button. 

  1. Once the other party answers, click Transfer

If you wish to have more than one caller on a telephone call, you can merge multiple calls to create a conference.   

There are four ways to initiate a conference call. The first two involve initiating a conference call from the Hub, and the second two involve initiating a conference call from an ongoing call. 

  1. Initiate a Conference Call from a group in the Hub:

    1. Navigate to the header of one of your groups.

    2. Hover over the header and click the phone icon.  

  2. Initiate a Conference Call from a list of Contacts in the Hub:

    1. select several contacts from your list of contacts by clicking on one contact and holding down the shift key.

    2. click the phone icon on any of the selected contacts to start the conference call.  

  3. initiate a conference call from an ongoing call:

    1. If you are on a call and wish to add another person to the call, go to the More button on the Call Menu. 

    2. Select Conference from the pop-up menu. 

  1. Merge two calls to create a Conference Call: 

    1. If you are on a call and receive an incoming call, you may wish to speak to both callers at once. This is possible by creating a Conference Call. 

    1. From the window of the ongoing call, go to the More button on the Call Menu. 

    1. Select Hold from the pop-up menu. 

    1. Accept the incoming call. 

    1. From the window of the new call, go to the More button on the Call Menu. 

    1. Select Merge from the pop-up menu. This will cause you to enter a Conference Call. 

Add people to ongoing conference call

Once you have initiated the Conference Call, you will see a screen that looks like the image above. From this screen, you can add participants to the Conference Call. You can do this either by typing the name of a Contact into the "Add participants" bar and clicking the phone button of the Contact you wish to add, or by clicking the green phone icon next to the name of a person already listed on the right side of the screen. Note: you can add up to six people to a conference call, including yourself.  

Unanswered calls are automatically forwarded to your voicemail.  You can also choose to forward your calls to another number.  Note: If the call is not answered, it will not return to your Tufts voicemail. 

Forward a call on Jabber for PC

  • Click the drop-down next to the call-forwarding icon at the bottom of the Hub window. 

  1. Select Forward calls to

  1. Select the number you wish to use. 

Add a number to your call-forwarding list 

  1. Click the drop-down next to the call-forwarding icon at the bottom of the Hub window. 

  1. Select New Number

  1. In the Enter Number field, enter your 10-digit number.  Note: do not add any text or punctuation. 

  1. Click Forward
