Faculty Activity Reporting
Overview
A Faculty Activity Report (FAR) is a comprehensive summary of a faculty member’s activities and accomplishments from the previous year. Once complete, it is submitted to their supervisor for review. The form is confidential and can only be edited/viewed by the faculty member and their supervisor.
Each form contains several sections, with the number of sections and content varying on a school-by-school basis. To fill out the form, faculty members complete each section by providing supporting information and linking items from their profile (publications, grants, etc.).
It is important to keep in mind that an item must already be located in a faculty member’s profile before it can be linked to their FAR.
Information for Faculty
This section is intended for Tufts faculty members who need to complete a Faculty Activity Reporting review. For more information, see the A&S Pilot FAR 2026 Guide for participating faculty.
- Log in to the Tufts Elements site with your Tufts credentials.
- On your profile homepage, you should see a notification in the My Actions section similar to the one shown below. Click Start. The button will show “Continue” if you are returning to the form, which you can do at any time before submitting. (You can also access the form from the top menu on your profile page: Assessment > My Submissions > Review Processes.)

The form is organized into Sections, shown in the left-hand menu. You can use this menu to navigate through the form or use the “Previous / Next” arrows at the top of the form. The “Overview” link displays a full listing of information collected for the FAR.
Each Section features one or more Lists. To complete the FAR form, you will add “Items” to these Lists representing scholarly activities or providing comments and describing achievements.

Profile items: Some Lists feature records from your Elements profile, for example “Publications”. Publications and Grants Lists are pre-populated to reduce data entry. You can add or remove records by clicking the “+” button at top right / “Remove” button on an Item.

When adding records, the Select screen will present eligible records linked to your profile. If you need to add a new record of this type to your profile, click the “Add New …” button at top right from the Select screen.

The process is the same as when curating your profile. Note that when you click through to the profile record, the screen opens in a new browser tab. When you have finished editing, you can close this tab and click the “Back to list” link at the top left of the original page to return to your place in the FAR form.
When adding a new record, you must complete any required fields, indicated by a red asterisk. In addition, please be sure to set the “Relationship Privacy” of a new record appropriately. “Public” records will be displayed on the public Tufts Discovery site facultyprofiles.tufts.edu. “Internal” records are visible only within Elements. This is particularly important when adding records with sensitive or confidential information, such as grants and professional activities. Refer to the User Guide section on Managing Visibility of Publications, Activities, and Grants for further information.

For more information about how to assign profile items to the correct module and type, refer to the What Goes Where guide.
FAR items: Other Lists feature custom records, used only for this FAR form. This information will NOT be displayed on your Elements profile. Examples include the Lists for Research in Progress, Academic Advising, and DEIJ.
You will add one or more Items using the “+” button above, and enter the information requested in the text boxes. Click “Save and exit” to return to the form. You can edit or delete any of these Items using the icons at the right of the record.

Once you have completed the FAR form, you can download a PDF copy for your reference. The “Download” button appears at the lower left of the form. When ready, click the “Submit” button at top right. This will move your form from the “In draft” stage to “Completed”. The form will then be available for review. Check the box displayed to acknowledge that you are submitting the form. You may wish to review the “issues” displayed to make sure you have not missed any relevant Sections or Lists. You can still submit the form once you consider it complete.
Information for Reviewers
This section is intended for those individuals who have been designated as “reviewers” of the Faculty Activity Reporting review (i.e. department chairs, supervisors).
To supplement the PDF report, you can view completed submissions from your department in Elements. From the top menu on your profile page: Assessment > View > Review Processes, then select from the listed faculty members. This may be useful if you need more information on the records included, such as publication citations available on the “Metrics” tab of publication records.
Elements also supports adding review comments and ratings directly to the exercise form, as well as a multistage review process (e.g. Draft > Chair Review > Dean Review).
Information for Assessment Managers
This section is intended for individuals who have been granted the “Assessment Manager” role in the Tufts Elements system. This access is typically granted only to school administrators who will be managing the assessment (Faculty Activity Reporting) process for a school. Assessment managers have the ability to monitor the status of self-assessments, move them between stages, lock/unlock them, and export them as PDF/Word files.
This access is also granted to the Dean of a school, who can review assessments.
An overview of exercises can be accessed from the top menu on your profile page: Assessment > Manage > Manage Review Processes. The screen will display forms (“exercises”) that have been started by faculty. You can use the filters on the right to limit to your department (Group = “FAR Biology” or “FAR Theatre, Dance, & Performance”) and exercise completion stage (Review process stage = “Completed”).
Download completed exercises as a PDF using the downward arrow icon.
If necessary, you can also return a completed exercise to a faculty member for editing using the “Move to” button—select “In draft” after clicking the button. The small controls at top right allow you to lock or completely delete an exercise—you shouldn’t need to use these!
