Backup

A lost, stolen or broken phone can mean the loss of important business data and meaningful personal mementos, like pictures and texts. Android doesn't offer a native backup service but there are many third-party applications that can help you save and retrieve your data.

There are a variety of backup apps available for Android phones and tablets.  A few of the reputable apps downloadable for free from the Google App Store include Helium and App Backup and Restore. Call the TTS Service Desk at 617-627-3376, send an email to it@tufts.edu if you need guidance on which Android backup app is right for you.

Remote Wipe

A lost phone can also pose a security risk for you or the university.

Free applications, including Google Apps Device Policy or Google Sync will allow you to remotely lock, locate, or wipe your device should it be lost or stolen. Installing the app before something happens to your phone is like getting an insurance policy for your data. NOTE: Your device must already have a backup app (see above) configured to use this option. You cannot install Google Sync or Device Policy and run a remote wipe retroactively.

Tufts email users can also remotely wipe a device that's been configured to use Tufts email via Exchange ActiveSync. If you need help with this option, contact the TTS Service Desk at 617-627-3376, or email to it@tufts.edu. For self-service, see Remote Wipe an ActiveSync Device from OWA.
