Working with Teams and Channels
Overview
The core premise of Microsoft Teams is that you can add people to a group, which is called a Team. Within a Team, you can have as many different Channels (organized folders of chats, files, etc) as you’d like.
When you send a chat or share a file in a team, everyone else in that Team will see it – and only people in that Team. If someone isn’t in a Team, they cannot see the chats or files shared in that team.

- Standard – Everyone on the team will have access.
- Private – Accessible only to a specific group of people within the team. You will be asked later to add specific team members to the channel.
- Shared - Share this channel with your entire team, as well as another person or team.
- Automatically show this channel in everyone’s channel list – Check this box if you want the channel to automatically be visible in team members’ channel list. Otherwise, it will be hidden.

Messages within a Team’s Channel are called Posts and can be viewed by anyone in the Channel.
Creating a New Post
- Click Teams in the left sidebar.

- Find the team that you would like to interact with in the left-hand Teams menu and click on the Channel where you would like to post.

- Make sure the Posts tab is selected at the top of the Channel window.

- Click Start a post toward the bottom of the page.

- Use the text box at the bottom of the window to prepare a new message. If you’d like to tag someone in your message, simply type the @ symbol and their name (e.g. @JohnJumbo) then select them from the popup menu.

- When you're ready, click Post.
Responding to a Post
To respond to someone else’s post, you can simply create a new post using the directions described above. You can also move your mouse over a post and use one of the available emojis or additional options.

Threads
If you wish to respond to someone’s post while creating a separate thread within the conversation, click the Reply option under their post and compose your message.

As people continue to reply to each other within the thread, it creates a side conversation. The main conversation and any other threads can still continue on as usual.

Teams allows you to generate an email address for a channel. Emails sent to that address, including attachments, are then posted to the channel! You can also control who is allowed to use that email address to post in this way.
- Click on the Options button for the channel and select Get email address.

- A window will appear with the channel's email address. From here, you can:
- Copy the email address so you can use it.

- Click Advanced settings, where you can manage who can send messages to the channel via that address or Remove email address to disable/delete it. (Note: The old email address will no longer be useable in the future, but a new one can be created by following the previous steps.)

- Copy the email address so you can use it.
Layout
Teams offers great flexibility for how you can organize your teams and channels.
Choose whether you want to see your Chat and Teams/Channels in separate panels or combined into one!
- Click the Options icon in the top right corner and select Settings.

- Select Chats and channels in the lefthand menu.
- In the “Viewing chats, teams, and channels” section, select an option:
- Combined – Combines your chats and teams/channels into a single panel, with dedicated Chats and Teams/Channels sections. You can also create custom sections for yourself and click-and-drag items into your desired order.
- Separate – Keeps your chats and teams/channels in two separate panels. Within each panel, you can also create custom sections for yourself and click-and-drag items into your desired order.

See below for a comparison of Combined and Separate views.

In addition to the standard “Teams and channels” section, you can create custom sections and add team channels to them. Within these section, you can click-and-drag teams/channels around as needed.

To move a channel to a new or existing section, click the options button next to the channel name, select Show in, and then select an existing section or create a new one.
