Tufts Mobile 2.0
In this highly-mobile world, we need technologies that enable real-time access to information. Tufts Mobile, which has been evolving since its inception in September 2011, provides easy viewing of services such as Tufts shuttles, Tufts news, events and calendars, athletics, video, Facebook and Twitter feeds. In March 2013, a new framework for Tufts Mobile 1.0 was put in place and in February 2015, the service was successfully upgraded to version 2.0. Now compliant with the 508 Disabilities Act, the new Tufts Mobile is usable by all members of the Tufts community and available on any device.
Tufts Mobile 2.0 also provides enhancements for the users as well as the developers, including:
- An enterprise mobile platform for Tufts to build upon
- Just-in-time access to information for “on the go” users
- Simple, seamless navigation
- Tufts branding and a consistent look and feel
- A publishers module to facilitate building rich mobile web sites and hybrid apps
- The ability to present multiple views on the desktop
Tufts Mobile is providing ongoing value to its users, as evidenced by the increase in return visitors from 48.9% in 2014 to 61.9% in 2015. The current year shows a large increase in usage on average with significant peaks during the recent winter snow emergencies.
Preparing for the Future
The Tufts community today is on the move and they’re using mobile application platforms to get there. Whether they use mobile phones, tablets, or other mobile devices they have all the information they need at their fingertips. In collaboration, Tufts Technology Services (TTS) and Tufts Digital Communications office was instrumental in developing an enterprise platform that will enable Tufts to take the next step with mobile and offer a Tufts Mobile app.
Initially, TTS is working to create an iOS Tufts Mobile app for the iPhone. This app, which will be free of charge to the community and downloadable from the Apple App Store, will be announced later this spring. A future initiative will include an app for the Android platform.
If you have ideas for improving mobile at Tufts or have questions about the website, contact the TTS Service Desk at (617) 627-3376 or via email at email@example.com.
