Preferred Name Change

 

If you use a first name that differs from your legal name, you have the ability to update it for general communications and also your public safety Student ID card.  Your Tufts Username will not change. Your legal name will continue to be used in systems that require it, for example: financial records, government reporting, official University records, medical records. Students note: you can have your name updated on class and grade rosters, but your diploma records will remain as your legal name.

Students

  1. Contact your school registrar to update your preferred first name in the WhitePages directory. This will also update first name in Trunk and TUSK.
  2. Update your preferred name in SIS. This will update your preferred name on class rosters and grade rosters. To update: click the pencil icon next to your name in the About Me tab. Note: While SIS allows you to select a preferred first and last name, at this time, you can only update preferred first name in WhitePages, Trunk, and TUSK.
  3. Contact Public Safety if you would like to obtain a new Student ID with your preferred name. Incoming students requesting their first Student ID card do not need to contact Public Safety, but will have their preferred name appear on their ID card automatically. Please note: preferred names can only be printed on Student ID cards if they contain alpha characters only.
  4. Submit a request to it@tufts.edu to update your Email alias/address and any other Tufts services you may use (see below).
  5. Medford students only: Contact mary.daley@tufts.edu or susan.keating@tufts.edu in Health Services to have your preferred name updated in medicat.

Faculty/Staff

  1. Update your name in White Pages
    1. Go to whitepages.tufts.edu
    2. Click User Login (SSO) link on the left-hand side
    3. Login with Tufts Username and Password
    4. Enter your Tufts Username in the search field, click Go
    5. Click Edit Your Entry button
    6. Update name, click Submit Changes
  2. Submit a request to it@tufts.edu to update your Email alias/address and any other Tufts services you may use (see below).

  • White Pages - Tufts online directory
  • eList – Tufts email distribution lists
  • Box – Tufts storage and content sharing tool
  • TerraDotta – Tufts travel registry
  • Any other systems that don't appear to have been updated after your preferred name has been changed
